Warboys Junior School -Chuck Gliders
A few of the club members visited the Warboys school to show them how to make chuck gliders, as an introduction to model flying experience. Two class rooms were used, with around 25 boys and girls in each, for a 4 hour period spread over two days.
On the first day wings were assembled from a basic design and the children added their own individual touches to wing tips. These were then coloured in with marker pens. The second session was spent cutting out and gluing-on the fin, tail and wing to the fus.; again lots of bright colours were added -now it was test time; so 50 children and their gliders descended on to the playing field. What a sight! -gliders in the sky everywhere!
On the Thursday they all came down to the club field where our man, John Stokes, was appointed judge on maximum distance achieved and best decorative finish. Some books, as prizes, were appropriately awarded and a few of us flew their models, while the young ones had their lunch and looked on.
I felt the end result was a great success and provided a sense of achievement, not only for them, but for us as well.
